Game-design in practice, group post #4

In this post we will go through each person in the group where we individually go through these points:

  • Group dynamic

  • Have the game developed to your expectations, if yes/no – why, what did go so well? / what could had gone better?

  • What do you think are the risks?

  • If you manage to finish the game, what will it take to take it out on the market and have a successful marketing.

Axel

The group dynamic in our group is good and we trust each other with the work we take upon ourselves. The only thing that might be a problem is that everyone feels to safe and take some things granted, or that hours will be spent in vein because the conversations easily take a turn to something not work related. My expectations of the game have been very high for some reason, I do not know why. But that said, the game has not developed to my expectations. The development could had gone better if we had more graphical artists and could work to 110% on work hours, not to get lost in other subjects. But I am still happy of what we have succeeded until now and the game is still in development, so it can just get better at this point. The risks are that the group loose the track and start loosing time on another subject rather than working. Another risk might be that our artist does not have time to finish all the content we need and it ends up looking bad. If we get to finishing the game and we are happy with it, it will take a lot to get the game published and get it out to everyone. One way is trying to get it on steam.

Everybody in the group know each other since before, and it comes with some positives and negatives. We can start of with some negatives, because of the group know each other since before and were are very playful kind of group that can joke around much. This make some serious discussion don’t take seriously and the work ethic a little bit bad. The positives is that it’s easy to talk to everyone and discussion thing. No not really for the much part it’s lacking art, this is because of that we only have one full time graphic artist. I did recruit three other artist on part time but some of there other courses took too much time and this set them back very much. The risk of the game is we maybe don’t going to get enough art to the release of the game and the reach out the game to enough people to get it sold somewhere. We need to find a group that is playing out type of genre game and market our game on places where those people hangs out.

The group dynamic in our team is both positive and negative, it’s positive because we all know each other and we have all worked together before at some point so we know how to work together, which makes it easy to talk about ideas and discuss the game. But because we all know each other so well we sometimes joke around to much and get no work done instead. So far the game development for the programmers has been on pace and we have most of the base programming done so far, the only thing i’m a little worried about is the art part of the development, considering that we only have 1 full time graphical artist and 4 artists that are working when they have time. A big risk with this project is that we have very little knowledge about how to market and sell a game to an audience. I think we need to get more art into the game to be able to market and sell the game, and we also need to find a stable audience to actually buy the game.

Group dynamic is fine. The game development is going as expected. The risks are that the game will look bland. The hardest part of this course is to find an audience, firstly we don’t have enough time to make a game that’s worth paying money for in my opinion. Secondly we aren’t known in the game industry so we don’t have any audience from before and don’t have any marketing experience to get one.

The group dynamic is good because we are friends and have worked together before and we known each other for over a year now which makes it easy to talk with each other. The game development is not going as I expected, because we don’t have a clear picture of how the prototype that we need for this course should look like. To make everyone understand what needs to be done we could make a paper prototype to show what we want so everyone is on the same page. The risk is that we won’t make a satisfactory prototype to show our clients in time and that our feedback is to represented by selected people and won’t be as popular that we desire. To successfully market our game I believe we need to make a great game that is spread by word of mouth since we don’t have the capital to commercialize the game.

The group dynamic is working well due to we all know each other and previously worked together on other project. Due to this we all know how to work together and how to avoid conflicts. But this also leads sometimes to lots of distractions due to us messing around.

The game has not developed to my expectations mostly due to the graphical artists not delivering any work. The programmers has done their work well and shown dedication and knowledge in what they worked on.

The biggest risk is the graphics department not doing any work leaving our project without art assets. The second is marketing. We have no funds to do anything so we have to rely on free marketing and social media. This might not get our product out to a large audience.
